For anyone who is not aware, Runes of Magic is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) created by Berlin-based Frogster Interactive. This title ranks among the budding category of "free MMOs." That means anyone can play without forking out hard cash for a disc and a monthly subscription.
If you are curious about Runes of Magic, the zero start up cost might make this an even more appealing online game. The graphics are similar to World of Warcraft, and the overall game play is player versus environment based. If you consider making a Runes of Magic account, there are a few basics you should keep in mind before interacting with other players.
Blind Inviting
Never blind invite anyone to anything, whether it is a group or a guild. This is usually frowned upon in any MMORPG. Always send a whisper (private message) first and find out if the other player is interested. They may be busy, have other plans, or be away from the computer. This has also become an adopted tactic of gold farmers and sellers to get free power leveling. Avoid a nasty label by asking before inviting!
In Terms of Gold
Gold is the currency earned in game. It is not difficult to earn thousands of gold when you begin playing. However, that does not make it alright to start asking others for their hard earned gold, even if it is only 10,000 for gear or whatever item you simply must have.
From level one to twenty, you will notice that you can get by for the most part on quest rewards. You are better off to avoid the auction house until you start getting some serious levels. Otherwise, you are only wasting your gold on gear you will quickly out level. If you ask for gold from another player when you start out, do not be surprised if you get a response similar to this. Suck it up and earn the gold-it will come quickly, anyway.
Prized Diamonds
You will hear mention of a currency called "diamonds." This is Frogster's bread and butter. Players can buy diamonds with real money (or through Zeevex cards purchased with real money). These can then be spent on a wide spectrum of in game items that are otherwise not available, including costumes, gear and mounts. Daily and weekly sales are offered to entice players to buy.
If you request diamonds or items bought with diamonds from another player, expect an unhappy response. This would be the same as asking a stranger on the street for cash out of their wallet. If you want the items, be ready to pay $5, $10 or more dollars for the diamonds first.
World Chat Use
Runes of Magic has a special channel called "world chat." This channel can be seen by everyone in the game and requires the purchase of a limited megaphone to use. Most people utilize this expansive chat channel to advertise guilds, items, or announce lofty achievements (such as reaching the maximum character level of 55).
Despite the fact that this channel must be paid for to use (be it diamonds or Phirius Tokens), some people still abuse it with annoying spam. If you happen to purchase megaphone uses, remember that everyone in the game can read what you are typing. The same goes for people who may be busy in groups or doing other things. Use world chat sparingly and never spam multiple lines of chat over and over again.
If you can keep your diamond purchases to a minimum then you can enjoy many months or more of inexpensive online fun in Runes of Magic. It helps to have some understanding of the game before you begin. These basic tips can help you form bonds rather than destroy them with your fellow players. Remember to have fun while being respectful of the RoM community, even if you are paying nothing for the game.
The Elusive Female Gamer
I am an avid female gamer with an affection for MMORPGs. I have played a few, starting as far back as Dark Age of Camelot, moving on to World of Warcraft then Warhammer Online. I currently enjoy Runes of Magic and have learned a thing or two about MMORPGs in general. The information provided won't get you "l33t" gear or rare items, but it will help you coexist in groups and form beneficial bonds with your fellow gamers. You can be the charming tank, healer or DPSer everyone wants in their group!
